“This fish smells bad! I can’t eat it!”

A child from overseas once said this to me.

Some children won’t eat cold rice,
but happily eat it when it’s warm.

They seem to love soft, fluffy bread.

Korean seaweed is a popular snack.

Some children even come to school with backpacks full of snacks!

When we welcome children from around the world,
mealtimes are always full of surprises.

Experiencing differences just as they are.

I believe that’s where cultural exchange begins.

I don’t try to make international children fit in.

Adjusting to a new environment isn’t easy for anyone.

That’s why I believe it’s important to respect each child’s pace.

I focus on what each child wants to do and follow their interests.

That’s what I value most when welcoming children from around the world.

To my 13-year-old self,

Your dream was to become an interpreter.

But you grew up and eventually forgot that you had once dreamed of becoming one.

Then, time passed.

Now, you welcome children from overseas at a kindergarten.

Your dream has come true in an unexpected way.

It all started with one phone call.

“Would you be willing to welcome children from overseas into your kindergarten?”

My answer was, of course, yes.

I didn’t hesitate.

Children from around the world
meeting children here in Japan.

I truly believed it would be
a special experience—

for the children from overseas,
for the children in Japan,
and for us as educators.

But at the time,

I had no idea where
this unexpected adventure would take us.

I never imagined that I would use English in my work.

I have never studied abroad.
I have never taken the TOEIC.

In fact, I spent most of my life avoiding English.

And yet, today,
I welcome children from overseas
into my kindergarten.

I am taking on the challenge of

“Opening up the value of Japanese early childhood education.”

Not only the things that went well,
but also the discoveries, doubts, and failures.

I will share them all here.
